A member of the Portuguese Bar Association since 1975 and the Brazilian Bar Association since 1992, Helena Lopes Xavier has founded and been a part of some of the most prominent law firms in both countries, such as XBB and Mundie Advogados, practicing law in a variety of areas such as Administrative and Regulatory, Telecommunications, Energy, Corporate and Tax. 

Helena Lopes Xavier also has a strong academic background, having lectured Administrative Law classes at the University of Lisbon, School of Law, and researched, as invited guest, at Ludwig Maximilien Universität – Institut für Politik und öffentliches Recht in Munich.
